Farms Galore! Marsh and Farmland Protected in San Juans

Protection of Richardson Marsh, home to one of only two wetlands in San Juan County, has been a long-term goal for the San Juan Preservation Trust. With the help of the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, the land trust worked with the Hoedemaker family to complete a dual transaction of Davis Bay Farm.

Nisqually Land Trust adds 6 acres of estuary to Upper Mallard Cove

- Successes

Nisqually Land Trust purchased 6 acres of  Upper Mallard Cove to safeguard source wetlands for this critical pocket estuary. Way back in 1998, the Nisqually Land Trust’s first project to protect Mallard Cove began with acquiring 46 acres of its mudflats and beaches that serve as prime habitat for forage fish and juvenile salmon.

Racing with the clock! March Point Heronry expansion become reality

- Successes

With time at a premium, Skagit Land Trust pulled together nearly 200 donors and 4 grants to add an additional 3.5 acres to their March Point Heronry. Though small in size, this 15.5 acre preserve is the site of over 700 Great Blue Heron nests, the biggest colony on the entire west coast of the United States!

A family-owned wildlife preserve becomes the Chelan Coulee Reserve

- Successes

The Chelan Douglas Land Trust just acquired over 2,100 acres 7 miles south of Chelan, named Chelan Coulee Reserve. Managed as a private wildlife preserve for the last 50 years by the Scofield family, the project was made possible by a significant contribution from the Rio Tinto mining company as part of nearby remediation efforts.

Salmon return for Little Spokane River

- Successes

After 111 years, Chinook salmon returned to the cool waters of the Little Spokane River as Spokane Tribal Fisheries released 51 adults into Waikiki Springs Nature Preserve last month.  The nearly 200-acre nature preserve is protected and managed in a close partnership among the Spokane Tribe, Inland Northwest Land Conservancy, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Multi-partner strategy for scenic trail on Whidbey Camano

- Successes

Beach View Farm Trail is now open to the public! Whidbey Camano Land Trust collaborated with multiple partners and funding sources to create the scenic trail that meanders through working farmland and connects to a public beach. Read more via Whidbey Camano Land Trust.

ESRP funding for GPC adds acres to Filucy Bay

- Successes

The Great Peninsula Conservancy is adding twenty new acres of conserved shoreline to Filucy Bay Preserve thanks to a $ 350,000 grant by the Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program (ESRP).  GPC is working with partners and community members to protect this wooded shoreline, bringing this protected area to over 100 acres. Read more via The News Tribune.

Phipps Meadow becomes Blue Mountain Land Trust’s first acquisition

Blue Mountain Land Trust  just purchased their first property, Phipps Meadow. The 278-acre property lies just outside Prairie City, OR and is surrounded by U.S. National Forest. The land trust received support from the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon (CTWSRO) and Craft3.  Read more via Blue Mountain Land Trust.
